The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Office of Enterprise Data & Analtyics has released the results of its 2013 Medicare patient experience survey. 2013 is the most recent year for which data is available. The Quality of Patient Experience in the 2013 Medicare Current Beneficiary Survey Public Use File survey looked at two important indicators of patient experience: General Patient Satisfaction (GPS) and Trust in Usual Physician (TUP). The quality of the patient experience was determined by combining the results of various elements of both the GPS and the TUP as reported by those surveyed.
Key findings of the report include:
- Quality of patient experience was slightly better for younger individuals (age 65-74) than older ones (age >75)
- Quality of patient experience was better for white beneficiaries compared to those of other races
- Beneficiaries with a higher educational background, those who were married, and those in better health reported a higher than average quality patient experience
- There was no statistical difference in reported quality of patient experience between beneficiaries with Medicare Advantage and those with original, fee-for-service Medicare
